What is Sensory Integration Therapy?

In a routine process known as sensory integration, our brain gathers sensory data from our bodies and the environment around us, analyses the data, and then organizes and integrates our intended reactions. A crucial role in meaningful, health-promoting activities that enable involvement in life is thought to be played by sensory integration.

For everyday tasks like academic abilities, attention, auditory discrimination, body awareness, motor planning, emotional security, and eye-hand coordination, sensory integration is crucial.

Children who have trouble with sensory processing often have Sensory Processing Disorder, a condition in which multimodal integration is inadequately processed, making it difficult for them to respond in a suitable way to environmental demands.

Having trouble analyzing sensory information, reacting inappropriately to sensory stimuli, having trouble responding to sensory information appropriately, and having trouble using sensory information to plan and carry out actions. Here at Sethu, we employ sensory profile 2 to recognize or assess sensory processing impairment. Sensory profile 2 is a series of tests that evaluates children's sensory processing and also identifies how sensory processing affects a child's ability to participate in activities at home, school, and in the community. It is a collection of subjective caregiver or educator questionnaires. The data gathered aids in developing theories for a child's sensory problems. Teachers and/or parents are required to complete this questionnaire (with regular contact with the child). The manner in which a parent, teacher, or other caregiver response reveals the child's patterns of sensory processing.

5 to 16 percent of kids globally suffer from sensory processing disorder. For children on the autism spectrum, SPD is typical. In fact, up to 90 percent of children have sensory difficulties at varying degrees. The sensory integration technique, which is frequently employed in occupational therapy, is one method of treating and controlling SPD.
